ABOUT TSURUYA YOSHINOBU

Tsuruya-Yoshinobu has a history of more than two hundred years as one of the most famous confectionary shops in Kyoto. We have served for Kyoto Imperial Palace and grand tea masters since our company was established in 1803. The head store of Tsuruya-Yoshinobu was rebuilt in 1994 using traditional architectural style of mercantile houses in Kyoto. There is a Japanese style teahouse with a view of an inspired tea ceremony room and a beautiful garden in second floor of the building. Please make yourself at home and taste our various kind of Japanese confectionery.

WHAT IS "KYOGASHI?"

Kyo-gashi is a collective term of Kyoto confectioneries which is used for traditional events and tea ceremonies among the imperial court, court nobles, temples, shrines, and grand tea masters. People consider it important to express the seasons through the style of confectionery. Kyo-gashi has been developed by sensitivity of Kyoto people who always cherish seasonal transition and a traditional lifestyle. Besides Kyo-gashi, there are many kind of sweets such as Namagashi (Japanese fresh confections), Higashi (Japanese dry confections), and Yokan (sweet bean paste bar), all of which please your five senses like sense of sight and taste.

Kyokanze

Kyokanze, a special famous confection of Tsuruya Yoshinobu that has been loved for a hundred years ,is rolled up like a ripple of water on surface with two kind of red bean paste, "Ogura-an" using the highest grade red beans and soft taste of "Murasame-an". Every one of them is hand-made by our skilled workers under the thoroughly food hygiene management. Please enjoy it with some drink you like such as Japanese green tea, black tea or coffee.

Yu-mochi

Yu-mochi has a refreshing taste. If you eat one, you would not able to stop eating. Tsuruya Yoshinobu Yokan

This is a small type of Yokan, a bar of sweetened and jellied bean paste which is made from the best red beans, sugar and ager. It also could be stored for quite a while, so please easily have fun with five kinds of flavors.

  • "Ogura" has rich taste of the greatest red beans.

Kaichu-Shiruko

Kaichu-Shiruko is an instant sweet red bean soup; only if you pour boiling water you could enjoy its taste.The outside material called Fuyaki; crispy texture which is made from glutinous rice flour and the inside is included red bean paste powder. Please softly split Fuyaki and put together with the inside powder into a bowl and pour 140ml of the boiling water, mix it well and enjoy. Also cool it with ice, you will be able to enjoy it in summer as well.

Kyo-beni

"Kyo-beni" is especially high quality rouge that has been made in Kyoto since a long time ago. Especially, Maiko and Geisha have been using regularly this traditional cosmetic. This confection has got a hint from the appearance of Kyo-beni which is put in the shell of a clam. First, take a piece of round rice cracker out of the can, then take bean paste from another can with the spatula, spread bean paste on it as much as you like and cover it with another rice cracker like a sandwich. In summer, we recommend you putting some ice cream inside of Kyo-beni. It could be exceptionally amazing taste as well.

Tsumugi-Uta

The main store of Tsuruya Yoshinobu is located in Kyoto (Nishijin) which area flourished as "Nishijin-Ori" culture such as clothes Kimono and Obi sash that used with kimono. "Tsumugi Uta" was named after "Nishijin-Ori" which comes into a cocoon ball made by silkworms to spin silk. It is a bite size of bun filled with sweet bean paste. there are two kinds of taste, which is containing mashed chestnuts and the other is pistachio.
